Device protection 101: How to keep your gadgets safe

Woe be the case for those who have experienced any of the following (what feels like) catastrophes. Cracked smartphone screen? Tablet bit the dust last time you tried to read in the bathtub? TV won’t turn on? Drone hit a tree? Laptop drank your venti iced mocha latte? It can feel like a punch to the gut when you realize your expensive electronics or valuables may be in trouble.

With the exorbitant cost of smartphones and other electronic devices, it’s so important to make sure you have a plan if, or more likely when, the unthinkable happens. Here are some ideas for ways to protect your most precious electronic devices.

Our love for our devices is eternal...

Gadgets are hugely important to most people, and we depend on things like our phone, tablet, and laptops to make life easier, do business, entertain us, and everything in between. That’s never been truer than right now (pandemic, anyone?).

If you’re like other Americans, odds are you either just checked or are about to check your smartphone, smartwatch, or other smart electronic device. You could even be reading this article on one!

The average person spends an average of three hours and 15 minutes on their phone per day. With the plethora of apps available on both iOS and Android, there seems to be nothing that can’t be done on a smartphone. Banking apps, email, internet access, dating, online games, news and more make our electronic devices simply a way of life.

In a recent study by the Pew Research Center, it was found that 90% of people check their phone within an hour of waking up and again 42-86 times per day. If you fall into that category and you were to lose your device, damage it, or have it stolen, your life could be thrown into upheaval.

It’s difficult to underplay the role of smartphones in our lives. Consider these other facts from the Pew Research Center:

  • Most of us have and use them. 77% of Americans regularly use a smartphone; 92% of 18-29-year-olds do.

  • Most of us live in households with multiple smartphones in use.

  • We use our smartphones for much, much more than talking and texting. 28% of Americans say they’ve used their phone in a recent job search.

  • More than half of us use our phone to shop. That’s good news for retailer and good news for consumers who can easily comparison shop on multiple sites for the best prices.

  • The number of people who solely use their smartphone (not a home computer or laptop) for internet browsing is growing — up 4% annually on average.

  • More than half of those studied get their news alerts on their phone primarily.

So how do you protect something so vital?

With the newest smartphone prices soaring above $1,000, the price of a replacement is simply not in most people’s budgets. But cracked screens and device malfunction still happen. That’s why it’s a smart idea to protect your devices with an electronics protection plan.

If you have mobile phone service through a major carrier, they probably offer mobile insurance. To replace a broken, stolen, or lost device, you’ll pay a monthly fee (around $15 or more) and, possibly, a hefty deductible.

With the latest smartphones being so expensive, and the price of electronics seeming to be going up every year, it’s imperative to protect your expensive valuables.

It may pay off in the long run to check beyond your mobile carrier. Kasasa Care™ is a great option because it offers protection at a super affordable price (like just a couple of dollars a month). Covered devices include both new and used smartphones and smartwatches, tablets, laptops, gaming systems, cameras, and eReaders, in addition to your other valuable assets like your personal property. Your devices will be protected from:

  • Accidental damage, like the dreaded cracked screen.

  • Device malfunction, mechanical failure, or manufacturer defect.

  • Water damage from a spill or complete submersion. (Ever heard that doomed splash?)

  • Damage from a power surge or lightning.

You can even combine more valuables under a plan. This will save you money and, with bundling, you could cover more of your devices and pay less. Possible valuables that can be included are:

  • Major appliances

  • Furniture

  • Televisions

  • Computers

  • Smartwatches

  • Exercise equipment

  • Patio furniture

  • Drones

  • Expensive camera lenses

Other smartphone protection tips

In addition to a protection plan, another way to avoid the cost and hassle of repairs or replacement is to practice safe habits when handling your much-loved smartphone. If you’ve ever been known to have butterfingers (it happens to the best of us!), we’ve compiled a few of our tried-and-true tips for better protection below.

Use a screen protector.

If you’ve been a smartphone user for a while now, you’ve probably dealt with a crack in your phone screen at least once. A tighter grip can help with drops, but another solution to this problem is to put on a screen protector (and preferably one made of thin tempered glass.)

Choose a quality case.

A phone case is essential to keeping your phone scratch- and crack-free. Not all cases are created equal, though — and at the very least, choose a case with shock-absorbent material like silicone or rubber. (Plastic cases aren’t as protective as you might think.)

If you’re looking for something slim, make sure to look for cases with raised lip protection to keep the sides in place after a hard drop.

Avoid extreme conditions.

Exposing your phone to extreme hot and cold temperatures can easily damage your phone’s battery and internal components. So try not to leave your phone in your car or out in the harsh, direct sunlight.

Keep your devices away from water.

Though the latest technology might boast waterproof features, it’s best to keep your phone and other devices put away while you’re at the pool, out in the rain, or hanging by the beach. This includes foggy and humid conditions too.

Don’t leave your devices unattended.

While it’s always good to unplug from time to time, it’s also important to keep your phones secure while you’re away from them. Make sure you never leave your phone in a place where it could get lost or damaged — or within a child’s reach.

When it comes to protecting your electronics, you have options. Check your mobile carrier’s device protection and compare plans online before making a decision, so you can be sure to find the best protection for your budget. That way, you’ll sleep better at night knowing all your valuables are protected by a robust and affordable plan.
